Privacy Policy
Last updated October 22, 2026
- Your tasting log is private to you. We don't sell your data or show ads.
- Label photos are read on your phone. A photo leaves your phone only if you choose a Deep ID, and then only to identify the bottle.
- You can delete your account and everything in it from the app, at any time.
This policy explains what SakeSake ("SakeSake", "we", "us") collects when you use the SakeSake app and the sakesake.app website, why, and the choices you have. If anything here is unclear, write to hello@sakesake.app.
What we collect
- Account details. When you sign in with Apple, Google or an email code, we receive your email address and a sign-in identifier from that service. Apple may also share your name the first time you sign in. If you use Apple's "Hide My Email", we only see the relay address.
- What you log. The bottles you log, your ratings, flavor notes, serving temperature, notes, and the photos you attach; your Want to try list; and your answers to the taste quiz.
- What you contribute. Bottles you add to the catalog, barcodes you confirm, what the app read from a label you scanned (such as grade, polish ratio or rice), and any problem you report about an entry.
- Scans. For each scan we record how it was resolved (for example barcode, label, search or Deep ID), the bottle it matched, and, for Deep IDs, which AI model was used and what it cost. We use this to improve matching and to manage costs.
- Basic technical information. Our hosting providers keep standard logs, such as IP addresses, device and app version, and error reports, for security and to keep the service running.
We don't collect your location, contacts or browsing history, and the app has no advertising or cross-app tracking.
Photos and the camera
When you scan a label, the photo is read on your iPhone using Apple's built-in text and barcode recognition. It is not uploaded for that step. Two things send a photo off your phone, and only when you choose them:
- Deep ID. If the phone can't recognize a label and you tap "Use a Deep ID", that one photo, along with the text the phone read, is sent to our AI provider to identify the bottle. We keep the result, not the photo.
- Photos on your log. A photo you attach to a tasting is stored privately with your account so you can see it in your log.
How we use your information
- To run the app: sign you in, save your log, and show your stats, map and favorites.
- To recommend bottles: your picks are calculated from your own ratings and quiz answers.
- To improve the sake catalog: confirmed barcodes, label details and bottles people add help everyone's scans match faster. These contributions appear in the catalog without your name.
- To keep SakeSake safe and working, to fix problems, and to understand which features are used, in aggregate.
- To reply when you contact us.
Who we share it with
We don't sell or rent personal information, and we don't share it for advertising. We use a small number of service providers who process data for us under contract:
- Supabase hosts our database, sign-in and photo storage (in the United States).
- Anthropic provides the AI that identifies a bottle when you use a Deep ID. Under its commercial terms, it doesn't use this data to train its models.
- Apple and Google handle sign-in when you choose them.
- Vercel hosts this website.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety, or as part of a sale or reorganization of the service, in which case this policy would continue to apply to your information.
Who can see your log
Your log, ratings, notes and photos are private to your account. The app doesn't have a public feed. If we add social features in the future, sharing will be something you turn on, and we'll update this policy first. Aggregates that can't identify you, such as the most common flavors people noted for a bottle, may be shown to others.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your information while you have an account. You can delete your account at any time in the app (Me → Delete my account). That permanently removes your log, photos, Want to try list, picks, quiz answers and scan history. Bottles you added stay in the catalog without any link to you. Copies in our providers' backups are deleted on their normal schedule, typically within a few weeks.
Your choices and rights
You can see and edit your log in the app and delete your account there. Depending on where you live (for example in California, the EU or the UK), you may also have the right to request a copy of your data, to correct it, to delete it, or to object to certain uses. Email hello@sakesake.app and we'll respond within 30 days. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.
Age
SakeSake is about alcoholic drinks and is only for people of legal drinking age where they live (21 in the United States). We don't knowingly collect information from anyone younger. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, photos are stored in private storage, and each account can only read its own log. No system is perfectly secure, so please let us know at once if you suspect a problem.
International users
SakeSake is run from the United States and stores data there. If you use it from elsewhere, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date above, and for significant changes we'll tell you in the app before they take effect.
